INTRODUCTIONS

2008-ONGOING

Introductions is a participatory photography project that explores the transformative potential in the simple act of meeting a new person. In public spaces in Toronto, I photographed pairs of strangers meeting for the first time.

Driven by a desire to increase empathy and belonging, I see these encounters as quiet, radical acts of hope—disrupting people’s default perceptions and patterns of relating. By taking a moment to recognize a stranger we are invited to expand our definition of “us”. We agree to experience vulnerability, courage, and trust in exchange for sparks of connection, possibility, and wonder. Each meeting becomes an opportunity to see oneself in another—an antidote to the “them-ing” that fuels racism, sexism, and other “isms”. Each photograph becomes a record of our shared humanity.
