PRESENCE PORTRAITS

When I was 16 I discovered how to stretch time.

In long exposures I photographed friends moving their bodies. I was shooting on film then so there wasn’t immediate technical feedback of the moment. Instead I trusted my photographic knowledge and the value in experimenting. The way that time and energy mingled in these photographs was magical, making something that we couldn’t actually see in the moment but could feel as it passed through us.

Presence.

Decades later, I am still enamoured with the way photography can capture feeling and energy. Inner space and outward expression. And, when we share the presence of ourselves with others we experience real connection.

Presence Portraits focus more on how people feel than how they look. Through heart centred prompts, movement, and guided meditation, I invite my subjects to connect to the subtle motion of their spirit, their heartbeat, their breath.
